This was the tentpole destination of the trip. The one around which everything else was organised. The one I booked first and the part I was most looking forward to.
A note I took halfway around the island:
Iceland is:
– Expensive
– Can smell of egg
– Can fuck you over with weather
Otherwise, it’s spectacular and brilliant. Everyone’s so nice.
I’m the sort of person who will open with a negative before moving to a positive (I’m working on this). Know then that in reality the last line there is 99% of what I will remember about Iceland and the previous three points are mere details that make me appreciate the good all the more.
Iceland is an alien landscape in the best way possible. Its a small place that can feel like the centre of the world. It was welcoming and fascinating around every bend and over every hill.
It was in Iceland, at the time I was there by myself, that I had a minor epiphany about the places I was going and the things I was seeing. At what point do you decide that you are going to leave a location? Looking at some of the places I went, it almost feels like I’m doing them a disservice to say ‘whelp ok I’m done here I’m gonna go now’.
It almost makes me want to have a huge list of things to see to give me a time limit and an excuse to have to leave. I’m usually a huge list of things kind of traveller but that seemed to be toned down this time around. I’m probably stating the obvious but slowing down and just appreciating a place in your own time is the way to travel.
Reykjavik

The first time I’d put on the full outdoors regalia
Reagan and Gorbachev negotiated here!
Saw this my first night and was intrigued
The first fish I’d had in F&Cs for years
